Magnum (3' and shorter) 12ga receivers used to only have serial numbers ending in 'M', but now a bunch of different letters are used. I have a 870 Wingmaster with a serial number of 815xxxV What does the V at the end of the serial number mean Thanks, JOhn. All of the parts are marked with Remington name or logo. 12ga 870 serial numbers end in 'V' for 2.75'-only receivers and 'A' for super magnum (3.5' and shorter) receivers. It does not have smooth polished steel on the receiver. The serial number on the receiver is CC92294C. The left side of the receiver closest to the stock has the serial number. The left side of the receiver closest to the barrel says Remington 870. There is an F stamped into the bottom of the barrel close to the receiver. 2 3/4” and 3”*** (top line) 3 1/2” only with Super Mag receiver (bottom line) on the left, I do not see a barrel code anywhere. The only barrel markings are the traditional Remington Arms Company Ilions, NY on the right and ***(star) 12 GA. The barrel dates it to 1972 and it has what appears to be a serial number on it. If I recall correctly the SN prefix letter started in the mid-1960s.I recently purchased a used 870 12 ga with a 26” barrel. I recently acquired an older 870 Wingmaster Magnum. The Collectors webpage also had a rough date range for 870 receivers based on the prefix letter. I also tracked the manufacture years of my two Wingmasters and an 870 Special Purpose by calling. He checked some other records and finally came back with 1960. She had to consult the custom shop and the custom shop guy asked me some questions about the gun. I sort of stumped her one day when I called in the SN of the 870 TC I bought about 8 years ago. Has a 'WY' date stamp on the barrel indicating a 1974 manufacture date. This 870 Magnum is in good condition and features a 30' barrel with a ventilated rib and a full choke, chambered for 3' shells. I visited a local gun shop and they had a true Wingmaster on the rack. The stamp on the left side of barrel is reading PUQ im not sure what year this means as I have looked through Remingtons firearm codes and cannot identify the year.
